                  balboa high school

In February 1962 a small group of bewildered students entered Balboa.
This group was destined to become the class of Fall 1964 only 3 short
years away. Their class sponsor was Mr. Sohlberg. Their first activity as
Low Sophomores was the Hello Day Dance. The King and Queen were
Bill True and JoAnne Ortiz.

Their first activity as High Sophomores was to elect their officers.
Many chose to run and the officers elected were Bob Patane, Pres.;
Pat Matasci, Vice Pres.; Adela Alotoya, Sec., and Janet Phillips, Treas.
As the term ended, though, there was sadness, for much of the class was
being transferred to the new Wilson High School at the end of the term.

The Junior year came quickly. The newly elected Low Junior officers
were Jerry Skagfjord, Pres.; Vicki Quartini, Vice Pres.; Pat Matasci, Sec.;
and Donna Hicks, Treas. Although, lacking in numbers, they made up for
it in class spirit. The Juniors won the first competition Rally. Then later in
the term on May 4, 1963 they put on the Junior Prom with the future class
of Spring 1964. The Theme was "La Bella Roma''* and it was held at the
Century Club with music provided by Walt Tolleson.

The High Junior officers were, Clarence Creeks, Pres.; Jerry Hill, Vice
Pres.; Ellen Stepanenko, Sec.; and Donna Hicks, Treas. The highlight of
the term was the Junior Exclusive on Dec. 5, I963 on the Balboa Stage.
The Theme was "Evening Encore" with music by Walt Tolleson. The term
wasn't over though, for the class went on to a Red and Green Day.

With Something under their belts, they headed for their great Senior
year. The new Low Senior officers were, Dan Rodrigues, Pres.; Mark Sultana, Vice Pres.; Sylvia Marchi, Sec.; and Ellen Stepanenko, Treas. They started by receiving the privilege of wearing the Senior pin at the "Move- Up" Jan. 1964. They went through the term preparing for Move-Up. They  put on a Senior Review which was excellent, and it even got a round of applause from a big Broadway Star, Carol Channing. They then went on to put on the Aloha Dance which was a sell-out and a complete success.
Then on June 8, 1964 it came—Move-Up. On that day the graduating class of Spring 1964 saw and heard the new High and Mighty class of Fall 1964. For 2V2 years they waited for this day and then it came and was over like a dream. The Move-Up Party was held at the California Club. The officers of the High and Mighty term were. Mark Sultana, Pres.; Sylvia Marchi, Vice Pres.; Caren Shuey, Sec.; and Ellen Stepanenko, Treas.;  Bonnie Joyner, Assistant Treas.; Pat Matasci, Girls' Rep.; and Tony Grado,
Boys' Rep. Their first activity was the Senior Picnic, which was held at
Turtle Rock Ranch, and all that went had the time of their lives. Then came
the Hello Day Dance and again a success. But the term went rapidly.
All this quickly became moist memories, and before long there was the
Aloha Dance, not given by them, but given for them. There was also the
Senior Ball held in the Franciscan Room at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel on
January 16, 1965. The Theme was "Moonlight Memories" with music
provided by Johnny Vaughn orchestra. Then on January 27, 1965 came
Graduation. There was the Graduation Breakfast with Clarence Creeks
the memory speaker. Then there was Move-Up, where through wet eyes
the class watched from the stage a new High and Mighty class move up.
Later that night there was Graduation at Balboa Auditorium. After Graduation everyone went to the Graduation Party at Castle Lanes and this was
the last time they were, as a class together.

These graduates, no matter what they set out and accomplish, will
always remember with moist memories their years at Balboa when it
was at its best.
