PRESIDENTIAL GREETINGS

I am pleased to have the privilege of contributing a paragraph or two to this special 50th Anni-
versary Edition of the Galleon. Our yearbook is a very special book; it is, in a way a "history"
book dealing with the period from 1928 to 1978. If one would scan through our Galleons from
the very first to this issue, a tale would be told of many lives. One would become acquainted with
the passing of styles and fads, of what was happening in the world and in our country — but
most of all what Balboa students were doing.

In a sense, each Galleon is very similar. Students throughout the years basically do the same
things — they participate in sports, in clubs, in student activities, and most of them go to class
and are serious about their education.

I always enjoy photographs of our beautiful school. It may not be the most modern school in
San Francisco, but I think it is still the most magnificent. How fortunate we all have been to be
able to enjoy the lovely spacious campus, to sit on the grass on sunny days, to gather with our
chums under the palm trees, to scurry across the graceful bridges between the Library Building
and the Main Building. Yes, more modern schools have been built since 1928, but none can
compare with the grandeur of "our" school.

But, Balboa High School is more than a building of brick, wood and concrete that can be
admired for its physical beauty. It is an entity which has affected thousands of lives. All of us
who have attended Balboa have been exposed to that contagious, and difficult-to-shake-off feel-
ing known as Balboa School Spirit. It is a spirit that has bridged the generation gap and which
brings Buccaneers of all ages together in common bond.

We are fortunate to have an alumni association (not every school has one). It allows graduat-
ing students to continue their relationship with Balboa, their friends, and other Buccaneers. It is
encouraging to see our membership grow.

I cordially invite all of the 1978 graduating senior class to join the Balboa Alumni Association.
Join the rest of us who took to heart the words to our beloved Hymn,

composed by Salvatore Billeci

We're loyal and ever true                     Balboa loved by every one

A pledge of faith we give to you            Where echoes ring of deeds well done.

We follow where our colors lead             Deep loyalty fore'er prevail

Our orange and our blue                       ALL HAIL, BALBOA HAIL!

Emily Powell SUMRALL (F'46) President Balboa Alumni Association
