President’s Report: Paul and Ellen Sucatre
SLTC celebrates the end of 2005 with a big bang!! Don't miss our 75th anniversary bash on December 10th. Details are included in this newsletter. Hope to see you all there!
Thank you members for your continued support of SLTC. January marks our 10th year as co-presidents. Time flies for sure when you are having fun. It has its ups and downs but overall has been smooth going these recent years. We all need to be flexible and roll with the punches and the biggest punch to our club has been the decision of the city of San Leandro to charge us for court use. In the past, the city has waived court fees for our NCTA and club tournaments. This has forced us to discontinue our revenue making NCTA tournaments and to charge more for our events. We'll see how it goes in 2006 as we continue to offer our membership fun tennis events.
Many thanks to our great Board for their support this past year and our helpers also. We could not have done it without you.
Have a wonder-filled and safe holiday season and join us in toasting 2006 on December 10!
Interclub at Hidden Hills – Saturday, November 26
Here’s a great opportunity to work off that holiday feast. Sign up with Ellen by e-mail or phone, shown above. Men start at 11:30; women at 1:30 pm and Mixed at 3:30pm. Cost $7 includes food, drinks and balls.
SLTC Club Championship Results

September 3, 4 and 5 were the dates and the results are as follows: .
Men’s 3.5 doubles---Dan Dewitt/Peter Chien
Women’s 3.5 Doubles Murline Monat/Kathy Garrett
Men’s 4.0 Doubles Andy O'loan/Mike VanDoorn
Women’s 4.0 Doubles Lorina Nakaya/Monika Wiedenmeyer
Mixed 6.0 Carl Wang/Helen Keating
Mixed 7.0 Elaine Hackenkamp/Peter Chien
Mixed 8.0 Lorina Nakaya/Cliff Feldon
Mucho thanks to Susan Jimenez and Andy O’Loan for their patience and fortitude in being willing to run this event. Without their coming forward, this event would not have occurred. Also our hats are off to Bill Williams as Chef du Jour and adding to the lip-smacking goodies.
Season Report
3.0 Sr. Men – captained by Paul Sucatre are in 3rd at 5-3, holding their own with 7 more to go.
3.5 Sr. Women – with Cindy Carbonetti at the helm is in 2nd with have 7 matches to be played.
7.0 Mixed – Captain Ellen says they’re having fun in lower 3rd! There are 15 matches in this group; each match is against a different opponent!
Expectations are: playoffs from our senior teams. Shall we get our Carmel reservations now?
Bruce Wallenius’ 3.5 team with mostly SLTC members is 5-2 with 5 more to be played.
You should have been there –

Chabot Canyon Interclub on October 7. With a good turnout, cooperative weather and yummy food, this evening became a special memory for all who participated. Interclubs are a great place to hone your skills without the nerves of a regular match. If you haven’t yet participated, make that one of your 2006 resolutions!
Mary’s Drop In These Friday night ventures continue to be popular. More and more different people show up as well as the “regulars”, who can be found at the court as early as 4:30 p.m. Mary plans to continue them in 2006 and is considering a Sunday afternoon special in the first part of the year. Keep watching your e-mail for the next great event. So that we break even on these activities, 2006 will include a $3 fee, instead of the usual 2 bucks.
Thank you to David Freestone for his protein generosity. Without him, we wouldn’t know what gourmet sausages are!

Tidbits
Injured Reserve: Leonhard is still recuperating. It was great to see him on the last day of the club tournament.
Yes, the SLTC Board has raised the annual dues. However, it’s only a slight increase as you’ll see in the application in this newsletter. It’s now $40 for family; single membership remains at $25.
Want to be Board Secretary? - Norma Coldren can give you all the details on what’s involved and what a truly fun job it is!
In Memoriam --Lucien M. Hjelm
Lou as he was known around the SLTC courts was a long-time member and served in many capacities. He was well-known as a referee and umpire for our Cramer and 5.0 events for many years. Without his willingness to do that, we would have been unable to hold those events and the club would have been definitely poorer. Most of us can remember his camper and his basset hounds; they were a regular fixture at the tournament events. He was an avid A’s and Raiders’ fan and always ready to talk about either one at any given time. Lou was very knowledgeable about the sport of tennis as well and had met some of the greats. He entered into rest October 20, 2005 at home in Oakland, CA. He was 76 years old, born November 16, 1928. His obituary was published in the ANG Newspapers on 10/30/2005.

Yes, it’s true. SLTC’s newsletter will only be available on-line in 2006. It’s one of our cost-cutting measures. This is the last paper newsletter you will receive. It’s also the last membership list for 2005. The next membership list won’t be available until March 2006 and you will need to contact Ellen for a copy.
