Fall is fast arriving and Elaine has several interclubs scheduled and Mary will continue our once a month drop in at Baytrees - Members and friends welcome for a nominal $2 fee.... and our BIG event
December 10th- Save the date for our club's 75th anniversary party! --p&e
SLTC Club Championship

September 3, 4 and 5 are the dates, so get out your calendar and coordinate with a partner. It’s doubles only. All levels welcome. To sign up or if you have questions, you can e-mail Susan Jimenez at noracket@aol.com or call Andy O’Loan at 510-317-8235. The cost per person is $10 per event. If you sign up for both the Mixed and Gender events, then it’s $15 per person. Such a bargain! Fees will be collected when you show up for your first match. No excuses. You must contact either Susan or Andy by Sunday, August 28. Here’s your chance for bragging rights and an opportunity for your name to appear on the trophy! .
BBQ and free play will be on Monday, September 5. The club will be providing the protein and Big Bill Williams will be wearing his best chef’s hat. This year, if you haven’t signed up for the championship, you will have to pay $5 to eat. That’s cheap in these days of high prices and no seconds. That’s another good reason to sign up for the Championship. We’re trying to cover the cost of the courts as much as possible. We prefer these events to break even or close to it.
Season Report
It was definitely a tough season. We had several very hopeful teams but playoffs and districts diminished our hopes and dreams. Wait ‘ til next year.
For those brave ladies who admit to being at least 60 and participated in the new League just for them, they go to NATIONALS in Palm Desert. Some of them are SLTC members, although they play under the Hidden Hills banner. You may even know a few of these bright stars. Good luck ladies!
--50 MXD record – If Mary D’s team wins this Sunday, it could be a 3-way tie for who’s in the playoffs. Good luck Mary and her faithful. Beat the pants off of HB!
--Combo Season is just getting underway. Fortunately, they are not under the hindrance of TPI. What is or was TPI – ask NorCal about that $50,000 question!
--Mixed and Senior Season will start in mid-September. You can still contact the following SLTC captains about this if you’re interested:
Sr Men’s 3.0 - Paul - sltc10s@hotmail.com; Sr. Women’s 3.5 - Cindy cindycarb@yahoo.com
MXD 7.0 - Ellen sltc10s@hotmail.com
You should have been there –
A big thank you to John Chin
for chairing our Singles Tournament the weekend of Aug 13-- a lot of good tennis!! Dennis Black was undefeated in the 3.5/4.0 Men’s entry and the runner up is not yet determined. They still have a match to go-- Ben Frager won the 3.5 Men’s bragging rights. If you ask, we’re sure he’ll be happy to tell you how he accomplished it. Kudos to all who participated on that nice, warm day. Some Pics at http://kipbrockman.com/tennis/aug14_2005/index1.html
Women's was one flight with handicaps. Winner= Ellen and Nancy O’Loan as the runner up.
Thanks everyone for participating!

Hidden Hills Interclub on August 7. We had a great turnout and the weather more than cooperated. Elaine Hackenkamp and Murline Monat (that miracle woman and trooper) coordinated it all for SLTC. Thanks to Hidden Hills for being great hosts and to Lori English and Rose Borja for their able participation. This was not our best result: HH won 9 to 6. Thanks to the following SLTC members for being a part of it all: Kerry/Carl; Roger/Mike P; Paul/Steve; Bob D/Paul M; Hon/Ben; Dana/Mike V; Alan W/Kao; Helen/Ellen; Diane/Murline; Jan/Susan; Jones; Boisserees; Sucatres; O'Loans; Akiko/Ben; Susan/Dennis
Next interclub dates: Mission Hills on September 17 and Chabot Canyon on Friday, October 7. Talk to Elaine Hackenkamp if interested
Mary’s Drop In These continue to be a fun event. More and more people show up which means they’re great opportunities to meet new people and enjoy camaraderie with one and all. You also get to play tennis and eat as much as you can hold; sounds like heaven to me..
Special Bulletin: COME PARTY WITH MARY Friday, August 26 - 6PM-at Baytrees, .--. Just $2 to cover court costs and BBQ. All are welcome. Bring a dish to share; Men bring beverages.

Tidbits

Your Service or My Service
These are familiar words in our environs.
Other than determining who gets to whack the ball next, the word “service” evokes many meanings and causes different emotional responses. A wise man once said that there is no higher calling than to be in the service of one’s friends and family.
On the other hand, try some of the following applications of service on for size:
q Selective Service or military service -- I think it means that you are going to get your ass shot off
q Internal Revenue Service – Do you feel warm and fuzzy?
q Service Interruption – It’s 28 degrees and I have no heat.
q Your service is cancelled – I’m sure I mailed the check.
q 100,000 Mile service – Sounds expensive.
q Service Station – When’s the last time that fool with his hat on sideways rushed ooout to wash your windshield as you pumped gas?
Back on the farm, my father had a huge Black Angus prize Bull (named Ron) that had the most interesting way of augmenting our cash flow. Farmers from near and far would bring their unsuspecting heifers to be “serviced” by Ron. Oh, how he seemed to enjoy his work! You ladies just might want to be a bit careful when you shout: “Your Service” across the net.
In Memory of Billy Bruce
In the course of living multiple decades, the number of persons who enter our lives in incalculable. Our core sails through the universe vaguely aware of others in our periphery. Probably, it is such a job to hold the center cell together that we unconsciously pull back in when we get stretched too far. My father used to tell me that if at the end of your life, you have two really good friends, you probably have lived a good life. His definition of a friend is one who would do anything for you and you would do anything for them. Each of your acts would be selfless; neither wanting recognition or reward.
Most of us manage to make enough emotional and physical bondings that we soothe the alienation that exists in all men. We are blessed as people who share connections on many different levels, sharing good times and bad. We benefit from events that require no invitation and when you arrive, multiple people greet you and let you know that they are glad to see you. Do you know how rare that is? Do you know how lucky you are?
Apparently, even in our tightly knit social community, all people do not connect. For whatever reason, some become free radicals, floating out there… lost in space. Alone. Their connection to the group never evolves into a primary bond. Their single connection might be described as a yellow object that comes at them from a member of the group. When they can, they send the yellow back and forth several times. The event may be so fulfilling that the parties involved may laugh and have a beer when the interaction is broken and once again they are a floater on the outside looking in. It is so sad when they don’t call for a lifeline. Hopefully, we are listening. ---------C. Guzman
