THE MORMONS

Mormon is a nickname for members of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was given to these people early in
their history because of their belief in the Book of Mormon.

Headquarters of the Church are located in Salt Lake City, Utah,
and flourishing branches are found throughout the United States,
in Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the British Isles,
the various countries of Europe, South Africa, Japan, Australia,
New Zealand, and the islands of the Pacific. The Church has a
membership of approximately 1,300,000.

Mormon history is one of the dramatic stories of America. The
Church was organized April 6, 1830 in New York. The startling
claims of its adherents aroused the antagonism of many people
who expressed themselves in violent persecution.

In an effort to find peace, the Mormons moved first to Ohio,
and then to Missouri. From Missouri they moved to Illinois where
they built Nauvoo, the largest city then in the state. But their
enemies would give them no peace. On June 27, 1844, Joseph
Smith, the leader of the Church, was killed by a mob.
