the usual supercilious expression of the camel.
The Arab accounts for this expression with a
legend. He says that while there are a hundred
names for God, man knows only ninety-nine,
but the camel knows the hundredth.
Perhaps the oldest of domesticated animals,
the Arabian camel has never been found in the
wild state. Abraham and Isaac had camels, as
did the Queen of Sheba, who brought a caravan
of them to Solomon. The camel has a foul
breath and an evil temper, but his extra stomach, which gives him his amazing endurance,
and his many other uses more than offsets these
disadvantages. He can outrun a horse, and out-
lives it, living to the age of forty or fifty. His
hair makes the finest garments, Arabs drink
the milk of the camel, make shoes and bags of
his hide, and, when necessary, eat his meat.

SCENE 7. Near Jahula we see a herd of water
buffalo wading to escape the sultry heat of the
marshes. A strange animal, the buffalo is never
happy unless it is wallowing in the mud. Ac-
cording to the Arab legend, the Horned One
(the devil) saw God making a cow and laughed
long and loud, crying that he had never seen
such a funny animal. Thereupon God chal-
lenged the devil to make a better one. So the
devil made the water buffalo.
Nevertheless, the buffalo is stronger than
the ox and wild is dangerous game. In India,
it is more than a match for the tiger.
