2. SHOOTING A MOVIE SCENE

A motion picture camera crew, with their camera on a boom that
can follow the action from any angle, is preparing to shoot the Circus!

A climate that allows outdoor photography all year 'round and a
variety of terrain that enables film producers to duplicate any scenery
in the world has built up the movie industry around Hollywood..Radio
and television, in search of talent, followed in its wake.

Although just a suburb of Los Angeles, Hollywood is much better
known throughout the world. Tourists ignore downtown L.A. to see
Movie Star footprints in the cement at Grauman's Chinese, the shops
of Wilshire Boulevard, the night spots of the Sunset Strip, the homes
of the Stars in Beverly Hills, and the monsters at the La Brea Tar Pits.

3. BLACK GOLD AT SIGNAL HILL

Forests of oil well derricks like this one at Signal Hill near Long
Beach dot Los Angeles, Ventura, Kern, Fresno, Orange and Santa
Barbara counties. This field has produced 8% of California's oil.

Along the shores at Long Beach, from piers built far out into the
waves or from wells drilled at an angle seaward, tideland oil wells
are pumping 15 million barrels of oil per year from under the ocean.

4. FLOWERS AT LAGUNA BEACH 3d Viewmaster

Along the coast about one-third the way from Los Angeles to San
Diego is much-painted Laguna Beach. The town is crowded between
a rocky coast and steep hills with artists' studios,' quaint shops and
beach homes lining its warm, sunny sands.

5. BEACH AND AUDITORIUM, LONG BEACH in 3d Viewmaster

Convention-wooing Long Beach does its Atlantic counterpart one
better by holding an annual "Miss Universe" contest to match Atlantic
City's Miss America Pageant.

California's fifth largest city (250,762 pop. 1950) is a seaside
resort of towering apartments and hotels, a haven for retired persons
who were first to sponsor the Townsend old-age pension plan, and a
shipping and industrial center on San Pedro Bay.
