gunfight at the OK Corral in 1881.
©SAGUARO NATIONAL MONUMENT Moving northwest, the tour carries us to "A Wilderness of Unreality." The habitat of the saguaro is limited to southern Arizona, northern Mexico, and isolated spots in California. Giant of all cacti, it may live 200 years, reaching 50 feet in height. Its spongy trunk acts as a water storage tank — a mature plant may "drink" a ton of water during a rain. The creamy white blossom of the saguaro is Arizona's state flower. ^) TUCSON—THE OLD AND THE NEW Tucson (Too-sawn), founded by the Spaniards in 1776, retains much of its Spanish Old World atmosphere. Residents greet each other with a "Como csta, amigo?" (How are you, friend?) and part with an "Adios," Pima County Courthouse, with its dome of Spanish tile, contrasts with the modern facade of Tucson's tallest building. Tucson (pop. 212,892), Arizona's second largest city, is the hub of a rich copper district, and the site of Hughes Aircraft Co., the state's largest single industrial employer. Its climate, "ten months of summer and two months of no winter," is ideal for sufferers of asthma and arthritis. Q;) MISSION SAN XAVIER DEL BAG San. Xavier, southwest of Tucson, is one of America's out- standing examples of Spanish mission architecture. Padre Kino, Jesuit priest explorer, founded the mission in 1770 as one in a chain of 24 scattered in northern Mexico and southern Arizona. Rebuilt by Franciscan Friars (1784- 97), the mission still serves the Papagos Indians. NOGALES, ARIZONA — SONORA BORDER STATION We are approaching Negates, Arizona, and Nogales, Sonora, the twin cities that mark the international boundary. Nogales, Arizona, is the state's largest port of entry in to Mexico, and the banking and trading center for the rich region to the south. Passports or tourist cards are required for excursion into Mexico's interior. ETC |
