CH57 The Rich Man and Poor Lazarus

CH57 Rich Man and Poor Lazarus
Luke 16:19-31

One day Jesus told the following
parable:

Scene One

There was a certain rich man who used
to clothe himself in purple and fine linen,
and feasted every day in sumptuous
fashion.

Scene Two

At his gate lay a poor beggar named
Lazarus. Ill and covered with sores,
Lazarus longed to be filled with the
crumbs that fell from the rich man's table.

Scene Three

But Lazarus lay unattended by all save
the dogs who came and licked his sores.

Scene Four

It came to pass that the beggar died
and was carried to heaven by the angel
into the bosom of Abraham.

Scene Five

The rich man also died, and was laid
in his grave with all pomp and ceremony.

Scene Six

In torment in hell, the rich man lifted
up his eyes and far off saw Abraham with
Lazarus in his bosom. He cried, "Father
Abraham, have mercy on me and send
Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his
finger into water and cool my tongue,
for I am tormented in this flame."

"Son," Abraham said, "remember that
you received your good things while you
lived on earth and Lazarus evil things.
Now, he is comforted and you are tor-
mented. Beside all this none may pass the
great space between us."

"I pray you, then, Abraham, send Laza-
rus to testify unto my five brothers lest
they also come into this place of torment."

But Abraham replied, "They have the|
word of Moses and the prophets."

The rich man said, "Nay, father, but if
one went unto them from the dead, they
would repent."

Abraham answered, '"It they hear not
Moses and the prophets, they will not be-
lieve even if one rose from the dead."

Scene Seven

John 11:25-26

Jesus said, "I am the resurrection, and
the life: he that believeth in Me, though
he were dead, yet shall he live.

"And whosoever liveth and believeth in
Me shall never die."
