| The EASTER Story PART 1 THE RESURRECTION SCENE ONE The Jerusalem of nineteen centuries ago -was troubled. They had crucified Jesus Christ, who had come to them as a Savior. The sun darkened and the earth trembled. Even the Roman soldiers who guarded Jesus told each other, "Truly, he was the Son of God." When evening came, Joseph of Arimathaea, a rich counselor, and Nicodemus, both disciples of Our Lord, went to Calvary. Pontius Pilate. the Roman governor of Judea. had granted Joseph's bold request for the body of Jesus. They took the body from the cross and wrapped it in fine linens. SCENE Two In a garden, not far from Calvary, there was a new tomb belonging to Joseph. Here they laid Jesus, covering his face with a head napkin. They could do no more, for the Sabbath, their day of rest, was near. Rolling a great stone to the door of the tomb, they departed. SCENE THREE The next day, the chief priests and Pharisees went to Pilate . "This man who called himself the Christ," they told him, "while he was still alive, told everyone that after three days he would arise. Give us a guard for his tomb lest his disciples steal away his body and tell the people, 'He is risen from the dead.' " The permission of the Roman governor gained, they put a seal upon the tomb and posted a guard to watch day and night. SCENE FOUR Just before dawn of the third day there was a great earthquake. At its height, an angel of the Lord descended and, rolling away the great stone from the tomb, sat upon it. The Roman soldiers who were on watch were filled with fear, and fell to the ground like dead men. SCENE FIVE When the watch recovered and found the tomb empty, they ran into the city and told the priests what had happened. The priests gave the soldiers gold saying, "Tell everyone that his dis- ciples came by night, while you slept, and stole his body away." SCENE Six As the sun rose on that same day, Mary Magdalene, with some other women from Galilee, set out for the sepulchre where Jesus was buried. They brought sweet spices to anoint the body of the Savior. As they approached, they asked themselves, "Who shall roll away the great stone from the door?" When they entered the garden, however, they saw the stone rolled away and the tomb open. Mary Magdalene, fearing the worst, ran back to tell the Apostles Peter and John that the body of Jesus had been stolen. SCENE SEVEN The other woman entered the tomb and found the body gone. An angel in white, guarding the empty sepulchre, spoke to them. "Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here; he is risen. Remember that in Galilee, he told you he would be crucified and, on the third day, rise again." The women remembered these prophetic words of Jesus. Filled with wonder at all they had seen and heard on that first Easter "morning,, they went forth to tell everybody of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Scenes created, by FLORENCE THOMAS |
