| The Tombs of the Kings are tunneled into the rocks of a burning, desolate valley hidden in the Theban Mountains some 200 miles south of Cairo on the west bank of the Nile. About 1500 B.C., Thutmosis I, XVIIIth Dynasty King of Egypt, located his tomb in this deserted place, thereby breaking an ancient tradition. Since the time of King Zoser, 3000 B.C., the Egyptian Pharaohs, who believed it was vitally important that their mummies lie undisturbed in their last resting places, built mountains of stone to secure their tombs. They hoped to foil possible tomb robbers by concealing the Sites. |
