View-Master Reel KY-1

1. STATE CAPITOL, FRANKFORT

The capital of Kentucky is Frankfort (pop. 11,916) which lies in
the Bluegrass region 45 miles east of Louisville. Founded in 1786,
the city lies on both sides of an "S loop" of the Kentucky river.
The industries include the making of shoes, fishing tackle, whiskey
and hempen goods. The Capitol stands on a gentle slope overlooking
the river. It was completed in 1909 at a cost of $1,820,000. The high
dome is made of Bedford stone and granite.

2. GRAVE OF DANIEL BOONE

Daniel Boone and his wife, Rebecca, lie in this grave in the Frank-
fort Cemetery. The one-piece, limestone memorial was quarried from
the Kentucky River cliffs at Boonesboro. It has four Italian marble
panels showing scenes from the life of the most skillful and daring
pioneer and woodsman of colonial times.

In 1775, Daniel Boone with 29 axemen cut a wagon road called
the Wilderness Trail through the Cumberland Gap, over the Alle-
ghanies to open up Kentucky to settlement. Dressed in buckskin leg-
gings and coonskin cap, Boone traveled the American wilderness from
Florida to Yellowstone. Born in Pennsylvania in 1734, he was seen
hunting alone in Nebraska at the age of 82.
