The bust is an idealized likeness of George Washington, It
resembles him so little that, by the late 19th century, no one
in the While House knew its identity and it was called "the
unknown man." Research since has identified it.
MINERVA CLOCK—BLUE ROOM
Occupying its original position on the mantelpiece is a hand-
some gilt-bronze clock, also ordered for the Blue Room in
1817 by Monroe. Made in Paris, it depicts Minerva, Roman
.goddess of wisdom and war, seated and leaning on her shield.
The gilt-bronze candlesticks probably date from 1817 also.
WASHINGTON MONUMENT AND
JEFFERSON MEMORIAL
The Blue Room windows provide a vista of the South Lawn, .
and beyond, on the skyline, two shrines to great Presidents.
The Washington Monument towers at left. Framed in the cen-
ter beyond the fountain is the distant Jefferson Memorial.

RED ROOM
Companion parlor to the Green Room is the Red Room,
which has been furnished in the Empire style of 1810 to 1830.
Instead of paper, the walls arc covered with red'silk.
Left of the fireplace is a rare sofa table with gilt winged
supports. At right is a gracefully curved sofa once owned by
MRS. HARRISON'S FLOWER POTS
Mrs. Lincoln held seances in this room after her son died.
Rutherford Hayes took the oath of office here. Mrs. Benjamin
Harrison, a lover of flowers, covered the mantel with potted
plants and wound festoons down the electric light fixture.
After the funeral of President Kennedy, his grieving widow
received world leaders in this room.
GREAT FRENCH DESK—RED ROOM
A magnificent old French desk is a highlight of the Red
Room. Among the objects on it is a historic inkstand, the only
While House item that once belonged to Jefferson.
The beautiful convex mirror above, recovered from White
House storage, reflects a wide panorama of the room. |
