3. HAWKS NEST STATE PARK, southeast of Charles- ton, is on the Midland Trail, U. S. 60. From the pinnacle of a towering rock, the steep-walled New. River Gorge can be seen stretching away into the purple distance. The 585-foot-high canyon walls are clothed with oak, maple, and dogwood.

4. GRANDVIEW STATE PARK is a great, rocky ledge 1,300 feet above the New River. A splendid panorama of distant mountains and of the 10-mile horseshoe curve of the river are visible from the park. Picnic sites and foot trails make the park popular with the citizens of nearby Beckle.

5. MORE BITUMINOUS COAL is mined in West Vir- ginia than in any other state in the Union—almost 200 million tons. A full two-thirds of the state is underlaid with. beds of coal ranging in thickness from inches to nine feet. The Poca- hontas coal found in the state burns smokelessly and yields coal tar, coke, pitch, creosote, and naphtha. Many West Vir- ginia farmers own small coal mines just for their own use.

6. BLUESTONE LAKE is a man-made lake, not far upstream from the town of Hinton. In 1948, the completion of the 2,000-foot-long, 165-foot-high Bluestone Dam created one of West Virginia's finest recreational centers. Boating, swimming, and fishing for small-mouth Bass attracts up to 400,000 tourists annually.

1. THE GREENBRIER HOTEL, White Sulphur Springs, is one of America's most fashionable resorts. Southern society patronized its mineral springs as early as 1773. Presidents Van Buren, Tyier, and Fillmore made it their "Summer White House." Almost burned in the War Between the States, it was bought in 1910 by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. During World War II, the Army made it into a general hos- pital. The C & 0 bought it back in 1946 and spent over $8 million in renovating it. Its 7,000 acres of landscaped grounds has three beautifully-cared-for golf courses. The hotel's Spring Festival attracts the wealthy and the high-born as they stop over on their annual migration from Palm Beach and the Bahamas north to Newport, Mackinac Island, and Bar Harbor.
